We are living in a age of information, where all sorts of data are available at our fingertips. Combinations, mergings, amalgamations and “improvements” give rise to new modalities at a faster pace than ever. A society constantly demanding, encouraging and rewarding the constant “newest”, “latest”, “trendiest”. With all that, there seems to be less and less space ( and importance given) to tradition.
I once read “ Tradition is peer pressure from dead people”. And it sure seems that most people look at it this way- That tradition is somehow an obstacle to evolution, growth, and advancement. I would like to propose looking at it from a different angle.
When we look at tradition, and here I’m referring mostly to Traditional Medicine, we are looking at a scientific process that has stood the test of time.
Problems ( disease/imbalances) giving rise to questioning, hypothesis, diagnosis, testing, trials, treatments, observation of reproducible results, and conclusions…..all of that done with data provided over millennia!
Why would we ignore that? Why wouldn’t we respect, honor and learn from those who walked the path before us?
No tradition is fixed. Everything grows, adapts and evolves…traditions included. Changes occur naturally, and propounded by those who dwelled deep into the system, acquired profound understanding and assist those changes accordingly.
Yes to new scientific research and advancements that pave the way to a brighter, healthier future. That’s where we are going.
But let us not forget where we came from.
In the words of a dear teacher:
“ There is no father without a grandfather.”
And to me, that sums up the importance of tradition.
